Last year in january a very rare guest came to visit northern Sweden, more specifically my neighbors backyard. The Oriental turtle dove is rare even in northern Europe and has only been sighted in Sweden 30-50 times in birdwatching history. Winter nights

Fredrik and I went for a small photo trip this night, to try and capture the old pulp mill. Weather was cold as usual (-16 C) but the sky was clear and the moon full. Night photography is really special. Colors are different, shadows come alive and if anything it makes me feel small, standing under a star lit sky in the middle of winter with snow and ice all around. Lots of snow and some grosbeaks

A few pine grosbeaks came by today. As usual this time of year there is very little light, and it only lasts a few hours. I ran out on the porch and shot some 50 frames. A few came out descent.   I like the colors of these birds and they behave almost like parrots, that means using their feet and beak a lot.   They are not common this far south (Umeå), since they thrive in taiga and preferably old spruce forests.
